Oronsay Priory

Meticulous Mick

Our trek across the outgoing tide took us to the Priory of Oronsay.

Our guide for the day informed us that it is thought that St Columba stopped here before he founded the Abbey on Iona. Alas, here he could still see his homeland of Ireland (one can see Donegal on a clear day) and with those thoughts could not rest. So on he ventured to Iona.

Inside the Priory House alongside these ruins are housed a number of carved gravestones. Given the times that these were carved, these must have been for significant people of the time. The work is amazing, and I am not even big into history.

So with that, the walk was on to beat the tide and return safely to the main island of Colonsay.
